Karean's Story

Life After I graduated from AHS, I worked at Suburban General then Dixmont State Hospital as a medical tech. I married a military man who was stationed at the West View nike site and began a life of travel, children, school and work. Much of my time has been spent in Miami, FL. Yes, I have braved the worst of the hurricanes, but I still love Florida. My children have all grown up and left home much the same as I did when I was a young person. Now, I enjoy my condo alone, and I love it. I love to swim, so I swim almost everyday year round. I love to travel to visit friends and family all over the world. I am just one "happy camper." I am always looking for a new adventure. I never plan to retire because I have the best of all worlds. I can teach in academia until I drop dead it I choose:-) School Ms. Mary Clark our World History teacher in the 10th grade and our librarian "Tinkerbell" whose name I can not remember both left an indelible mark on me. Ms. Clark's dignity when she was challenged by the DAR(Daugher's of the American Revelution) for her views on communism. She said communism like capitalism is an economic system. It reduced my fear's forever. And, the beautiful little librarian whose name I wish I could remember allowed me to read whatever book she had under her desk. I read some really great literature because of her influence. Thanks to two great women I had an opportunity to view the world from a completely different perspective. College I did not go to college until my former husband returned from Vietnam. As a late bloomer with four young children I started to bust the books. I...Expand for more
loved every minute of it. I received an AA degree from then Miami-Dade Community College in Miami, FL, major in psychology; a BA from Chatham College in Pittsburgh, PA, major Business Management and English, then a M.Ed. from Pennsylvania State University--Penn State, University Park, PA in adult education. I enjoyed my time at each institution or shall I say I made the most of my time. It was difficult as an adult--nontraditional student who had been out of school for so long with teenagers at home to care for as well, but I rallied to the challenge, and I am very glad that I did. Workplace I must say that my work life was the pits when I was young. However, after I got my degrees my work life has been not only challenging but interesting. I have had the pleasure to teach at CCAC the Community College of Allegheny County, MDC Miami Dade College and served as a consultant to design and develop learning centers and programs for many other institutions. I have served on boards, been a commissioner of sorts, and just been completely happy in most situations. It is funny but during my career I have taught over 25,000 students that is more people than who lived in Ben Avon and the little boroughs were I grew up. As the kids would say "it has been the fun-est." Military I like to think I was never in the military, but I was married military for 16 years of my life. After Vietnam very thing went downhill. But, thanks to the military I got out of the "burgh." While in the "war" as my former call it, the children and I lived in El Paso, Tx for five years and in Florida back and forth for most of our lives.
